Why the manifold matters
The manifold is the first thing the exhaust gas touches. A poorly designed one chokes the engine before any of the downstream pipework has a chance to work. A properly designed one extracts gas cleanly and lets the engine breathe the way it was meant to.
For turbocharged builds, manifold design is even more critical. Pulse separation, runner length and collector geometry all affect spool, peak power and exhaust gas temperature.
